History and Achievement

The Department of National Trade Measurement & Standards will continue to promote and enhance an equitable market place where consumers are protected and businesses are able to operate competitively in an environment of fair trade.

History and Achievement

This Department was formed in 1957 known as the Weights and Measures Department. During that period the Examiner of Weights and Measures were involved in the Inspection of Weighing and Measuring Appliances in Fiji with the Imperial System. ie (pounds and ounces).

When metrication comes in to force in the country in the 1970’s, the Department then slowly transformed in to the International System of Units, SI.

The technological change slowly enters the market from then on. We see the facing off of the mechanical system to digital and electronic system coming in to use in Fiji.

Now the Department have expanded its services not only to the weighing instruments, but too many other parameters like length measure, time and frequency, wheel load weighers, parking meters, dispensers for fuel and gas companies, energy and water meters, also the inspection of pre-packed goods and bread regulations.

The Department have opened a new measurement laboratory in 1980’s to maintain physical standard and conduct some calibrations of reference standards.

Presently it has not fully in operational as we do not have proper laboratory and equipments.

With the equipment we have in our Measurement Laboratory we can cater for the Industry and Government demands for National Certification and Inspection services.

The National Measurement Laboratory can also conduct National Calibration and Comparisons Services.

In 1995, we set up the Standards Unit under Trade Standards and Quality Control Decree 1992. The role of this unit is to develop standards to be used in Fiji.

The standards developed are either mandatory, voluntary or safety information standards. The Standards unit monitors the local market for banned products or dangerous goods.
