Comments by the Permanent Secretary

The Ministry of Industry and Trade plays a crucial role in fulfilling the national outcomes that are articulated in the People’s Charter for Change, Peace and Progress (PCCPP) and the Roadmap for Democracy and Sustainable Social and Economic Development (RDSSED).

2012 will bring new responsibilities with the inclusion of the International Trade portfolio in the Ministry. This will enable a consolidated Trade Unit in the Ministry that advises and implements policies for the Fijian Government on domestic and international trade issues.  Moreover, the Ministry will streamline and improve the functions of the Cooperatives Business and Trade Measurement & Standards to focus efforts on small business and grassroots development, at the same time ensuring that we maintain high trading standards.

The Ministry has made concerted efforts in identifying the strategies and targets to successfully fulfil the critical role it plays in formulating and implementing policies that will provide an enabling environment to attract investment, create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

The Ministry is committed to the Government’s economic objectives and to ensure its achievement the Ministry will undergo the required reforms to bring about the desired changes. There will be a concerted effort to increase productivity and improve efficiency in the workplace and this will be accompanied with continued Capacity Building for all officers.

Finally, enhanced partnership with industry stakeholders and our customers would provide the impetus to achieving our goals in 2012, within the resources allocated.
